ANITA GARIBALDI

"Do not be afraid to live, to run after your dreams. Be afraid to stand still."

Brazil struggled when Ragamuffins, a small group began to rebel in the attempt to replace their mighty emperor by elected politicians. Anita Garibaldi -who believed in democracy and freedom- optimistically joined the RM to fight against the imperial army. Anita and her life partner, Giuseppe vowed to fight where the battle was bloodiest.

When she was 7 months pregnant, so her husband ordered a retreat, but Anita refused and fought on. Amidst the chaos, her horse was slaughtered and she was separated from her beloved husband. Yet, she persistently fought, until she was captured by the troops and told that Giuseppe was killed. She pleaded to return to the enemy territo

ry on foot to search bravely for his dead body. Disappointed at its apparent absence, she stole a horse and escaped. She travelled for days- even crossing a raging river by hanging on to the horse’s tail- until she arrived at a farm where she found and reunited with her husband in time for the birth of their first child!

This was the first of many battles the power couple fought together. Her name came to symbolise freedom and courage all around the world. Truly a fighter!
